I admire Snowden for what he did. The film was theatrically released in the United States on September 16, 2016, by Open Road Films and on September 22 in Germany. While Oliver Stone did a good job of making Snowden understandable, and even to a certain extent likable, I could not forget that the secrets he exposed did a great deal of harm to the country which had done so much for him. I was reluctant to watch this movie because he was portrayed in the media as a traitor, and I believed it. His story, the full story, would never have seen the light of day if he had not done what he did. The film keeps returning to those scenes in Hong Kong, but most of it consists of flashbacks that begin in 2004, when the 20-year-old Snowden tried to enlist in Special Forces but was sidelined by an injury.
As for Snowden himself, he ultimately comes off as conflicted and pathetically weak, and I think, that despite this sugar coated version of his story, he will rightfully go down in history alongside such despicable figures as Benedict Arnold. Sad really and in the end, a tale of personal failure, and not bravery. I'm still investigating, thinking and taking tylenol. It takes a lot of guts to stand for what you believe in, especially if you know that you will be viewed as a traitor and not a True Patriot. It's unfortunate for Snowden that he risked so much to inform the most apathetic population on earth. The story moves along without any real sense of urgency or suspense. The constitution and the bible are the same in that so many claim to cherish them, but nobody bothers to read or understand them.
Reviews: By far the biggest story of U. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a good job of disappearing into the guarded, self-contained character. If you don't believe me, watch this movie and learn the truth behind Snowden and his actions. I was prepared to hate the person Snowden, his actions and cheer the shredding by the Feds. . Snowden broke a trust in revealing secret programs, but he would have broken a different trust had he not done so.
Snowden, in my opinion, is the living embodiment of what a true American patriot is, for it is The People who steer the course of the nation, not it's government, and it was high time the government came to understand that fact!. Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle Slumdog Millionaire brings some pictorial flair to all the various locations where the story is set. The film begins in 2013, when Snowden set up a meeting with Poitras played here by Melissa Leo and journalists Glenn Greenwald Zachary Quinto and Ewan MacAskill Tom Wilkinson in a Hong Kong hotel room. What is the Snowden Movie About? Edward Snowden is the living embodiment of that statement. There are a lot of good actors in this movie, but aside from Gordon-Levitt, almost none of them has a chance to etch an indelible character.
Snowden for your courage and conviction. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title character, Edward Snowden, with Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Logan Marshall-Green, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schnetzer, LaKeith Lee Stanfield, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage also starring. Leo, Wilkinson and Nicolas Cage have so little to do here that we would never guess they had won awards in other films. Snowden is a 2016 biographical spy thriller film directed by Oliver Stone and written by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald, based on the books The Snowden Files by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. Lindsay never blossoms into a full-blooded, distinctive character.
Had he remained loyal to his nation, it could have been otherwise. It also made him perhaps the most dangerous whistleblower of government overreach in history, or at least since Daniel Ellsberg. Stone offers up a plethora of footage showing terrorists being blown up, and then excuses the targets themselves with anecdotal tales of mistakes that were actually are an inevitable part of war. Filming began on February 16, 2015 in Munich, Germany. In one argument with his mentor well played by Rhys Ifans , his boss tells him that the government programs have prevented major catastrophes, whereas Snowden argues that citizens should have knowledge of what is happening before surrendering their freedoms. These revelations made him a man without a country, and a fugitive charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 for allegedly revealing classified information that compromised the security and the lives of U. For Thomas Jefferson said it best.
So far all I can say is Thank You Mr. A stunning performance by Levitt and an awesome supporting cast. Stone has rarely been successful with female characters in his movies, and although Woodley is a talented actress, the role is little more than a variant on the stereotypical wife or girlfriend always telling her man to be careful and railing when he shuts her out. A lot of people can't see the forest through the trees, and these sheeple are often quick to dismiss those of us who know the truth. If Snowden proved anything, is that absolute power corrupts absolutely. I can't know if the accuracy of the emotional and intellectual path Snowden followed, but that felt plausible and is all the more dramatic because of its simplicity. What he did took courage and sacrifice, to selflessly throw oneself upon a grenade to expose a weapon of tyranny that was being turned upon the American People and the world, should be lauded with medals and accolades, not persecution and banishment.
Forget the production values, acting etc etc. Snowden also begins a love affair with Lindsay Mills Shailene Woodley , a photographer who is troubled by his secrecy. Great film that clearly demonstrates that political parties are little more than window dressing. He appears at the very end of this film, and he only reminds us of what the rest of this well-crafted but lackluster opus is missing. . . .
