While working as a receptionist at a college technology forum, Okabe meets the short, spunky Maho Hiyajo, who later turns out to be the interpreter at the forum's presentation, conducted by Professor Alexis Leskinen. Zero is a side story that explores events from the Beta Attractor Field's future that contribute in making the end of the original story possible. Afterwards, Leskinen and Maho recruit Rintaro as a temporary tester, installing an app on his phone allowing him to converse with Amadeus Kurisu and provide data. Arriving just before Rintaro returns from his failed rescue attempt, Mayuri calls her past self and encourages her to set Rintaro on the right path, after which she and Suzuha are forced to jump into a random time period to avoid causing a time paradox.
