He is a corrupt official called Uthaman, and then there is Iniyan who as a victim of corruption decided to fight back. He is assisted by a team of con artists played by Ramya Krishnan, Keerthy Suresh, Senthil, Sathyan and a few others who have their own back stories. The music for the movie is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. But since the screenplay did not give them any scope, they could not deliver the impact that the original gave. As a policeman explains during a job interview, if there are 44,000 applications for 1800 jobs, how do you expect the selection process to be transparent? For people like Iniyan and his friend Kalaiarsaran in a cameo , government jobs are the only way out. In the end, Thaanaa Serndha Koottam comes off as a disappointing mix-match of Special 26 and Vijayakanth's 2002 film Ramanaa, with a few inspirations from Kamal Haasan's Sathya 1988 and some from Shankar's works.
The main reason for this is that the total second half of the movie is changed and it wasn't changed for good. After facing personal losses and humiliation, he does what all Tamil heroes should do - take the law into his own hands. First off, this does not seem to be a complete remake of Special 26. Finally, Kurinjivendhan gets on their trail, and does a most unprofessional job of nabbing them. This organism has changed to better suit a new environment…the environment of Tamil commercial cinema and I mean that in the best possible sense. By bringing Ramya Krishna on board, the director has also used lot of comedy. Her character and the track showed mild promise which only fades into expected disappointment.
It's the centuries old Robinhood story, retold in the eighties. Karthick's acting seemed a bit too forced and unnatural and the jokes were a bit too cringy. The director has changed the climax totally from the original and made it message-oriented like all recent Tamil mass hero films , making it drag a bit in the second half. For the ones who haven't watched the original, then this movie might entertain to an extent. The main reason behind that is Suriya's look and costumes, which sometimes look ultra-modern.
Thaanaa Serndha Koottam Review: Taking the core plot of Neeraj Pandey's Special 26, a solid caper, Vignesh ShivN has come up with a heist film that is playful for the most parts, but gets message-heavy in the end. Akshay could not be bothered about what his fans thought of his character. To say the least, Engae Endru Povathu is inspiring. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam 2018 : Since I watched Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,I was impressed by Vignesh Shivan's skill of blending humor in serious plots. Watch it if you like Surya, watch it if you want to laugh and have fun. But we can't expect logic in the movie of a mass hero like Suriya.
For example, when Iniyan and team are set to interview a group of people, we hear the names Paneer Selvam, Vijaykanth, Prabhakaran and Sasikala -- all of whom talk about fighting corruption in the society. Instead he alone should take it on his shoulders to right all wrongs. . So a heroine for heroine's sake. He is seen making fun of himself and turns what others consider his weakness, his height, into an advantage.
Let's work together to keep the conversation civil. As hard as the film tries to be serious, it is tough to take it so. The film opens in a smart manner with nothing associated in a big star movie. However, some clever writing saves the end and also the film. The cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan was neat and was crisply edited by Sreekar Prasad who saved the audience. The tunes carry to the listener the sheer joy of a guy who is smitten by a pretty girl he just found, and Anirudh's vocals are an important reason for that.
Negatives: The thrilling element is completely missing. Anirudh delivers a mixed bag. He presents you with lots of twists and turns. Its very refreshing to Surya on such fun filled role and its a cakewalk for him to this simple role. Now to the possitives of the film: The songs, Surya and Ramya Krishnan's performance and some nice laughs. The director had made a complete mess of it. Being a honest officer is one thing and trying to be is another, Suriya presents himself rather well as the fake utthaman, a role he can be proud of.
